Upstream Strategy Reviews - Examples
"Operational Exploration Strategy" (2009-2010): working as an embedded member of the Client's high-calibre project team, the task of the consultant was to develop a suitable screening methodology and guide the assessment and ranking of some 50 key petroleum basins worldwide. Several exploration areas were identified and recommended to the Client. In some of these areas, giant HC discoveries have been made since then.
“Commercial ranking of 160 carbonate basins worldwide” (2003): in the context of a Client’s larger strategy review project the task was to define and agree bespoke screening criteria for “commercial attractiveness” with the Client’s management, establish an appropriate screening work flow, and provide a commercial ranking of technically attractive basins.
Exploration Performance Assessments - Example
"Value Generation from Exploration" (2010-2012): as project manager supported by a Client's cross-functional team, the task was to estimate and track the net value generated by the Client's exploration effort over the past 10 years, respectively. Following the development of a reliable quick-look methodology acceptable to finance, reservoir engineering, exploration and portfolio management functions, an efficient workflow was established for the collection and quality control of technical and financial input data. The initial study was repeated over three years (covering three consecutive 10-year periods) and results were presented to the Board. Client staff was then trained to run the exercise as a routine controlling instrument on an annual basis.
Quick-look E&P Opportunity Screening - Examples
"Unconventionals Screening" (2011): development of a methodology for high-level, quick-look screening of shale gas and shale oil opportunities as initial input for a Client's "unconventionals" strategy.
"Brazil Onshore Basins Screening" (2011): high-level prospectivity screening and ranking of onshore basins in Brazil as contribution to a Client's Brazil country strategy.
Regional E&P Opportunity Reviews of Ukraine (2007), Hungary (2008), Ukraine (2007), Central & Eastern European basins (2007), Azerbaijan/South Caspian basin (2006), Egypt (2004), Iran (2003), and Middle East region (2002): the task was to identify attractive business opportunities by analyzing petroleum geology, exploitation efficiency and above ground business conditions for risks and rewards. Client-specific entry options were then worked out with proposed action points necessary to facilitate the capture of target opportunities.
Fast-track Asset Characterization of a mid-sized E&P company (2001) that was up for sale. This non-exclusive study was marketed in North America, Europe and Australia via JFA Global Ltd.
Petroleum-Geological Basin and Play Analysis - Examples
"Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Prospectivity Study" (2011): the task was to provide a ranking of prospective areas in preparation for the Client's possible future entry to the region, facilitated by detailed play and prospectivity maps. Understanding of the region’s petroleum systems could be significantly improved with the creation of a novel stratigraphic synopsis chart based on sequence stratigraphic principles.
"Norwegian North Sea Petroleum-Geological Review" (2004): assessment of proven and potential plays with a view on the remaining potential of the Norwegian North Sea (part of a JFAI study for a North American Client). Supported by original maps, cross-sections and graphs.
"Review of the pre-Khuff play and its petroleum potential" in a Middle Eastern country (2002): independent "2nd opinion" assessment requested by a Client to help decide on a future exploration program.
Co-developer of GLOBAL WINDOW 2002-2008
As senior associate of JFA Global (UK) and JFA International Ltd. (UK), co-developer of JFA's unique GLOBAL WINDOW benchmarking system, which offers a high-level below/above ground information base and characterization of the worldwide E&P opportunity set. Updated and expanded every six months, GLOBAL WINDOW included over 300 petroleum basins/locations in the edition of January 2008.

In March 2008, the GLOBAL WINDOW product and the remainder business of JFA International Ltd. were acquired by IHS who offer GLOBAL WINDOW as "the platform for a comprehensive assessment of global E&P opportunities" (http://www.ihs.com/products/oil-gas-information/analysis-software/basin-investment-opportunities.aspx).

Country Upstream Analysis Reports – Example
"Iran – Current Status & Post-sanction E&P Opportunities" (2014): this report helps to develop an understanding of today’s Iran from the country’s long, eventful history to its current political system, critical aspects of today’s cultural and operating environment, and the evolution of the country’s petroleum industry and legislation. Based on this, various post-sanctions scenarios are assessed and ranked. The report also provides a concise overview of Iran’s petroleum geology, exploration history and specific future upstream opportunities. Recommendations are offered on how to approach a future entry and how to operate in the country. The report is supported by a wealth of original maps, graphs, and tables.
